Artist's Comments

This pin is what i like to refer to as, an updated version of documenting the sun on a special occasion. There are many drawings and such that document the sun and moon so i wanted to do it in a different way. In this case, on November 8th, 2006, Mercury transited the sun, meaning it came between the Earth and sun, and so was visible crossing the disc of the sun. you can see the drilled holes to represent Mercury's path, with the blackened rivet denoting the current postion, as well as any current sun spots and flares. It is made of brass, and has a dome shape. Surface was sandblasted and colored with color pencils. dimensions are 2" x 2" x .5"

Transit of Mercury Pin by ~mcdanny3 is an amazing adornment. Not only is it a finely crafted piece of jewelry with its delicate solar flares, but the intricacies of color playing across the surface of the dome draw you into a solar world that really does seem to move. Your depth of color on this piece is absolutely amazing. I confess, I have a difficult time believing that you can achieve such beautiful color on metal with pencils.

Moreover, I would happily wear this on my coat any day.

alas, it is true though. i chose brass for the yellow base color, and when sandblasted, it provides more than enough grit to hold the pencil in there. i was rather impressed with the color myself.
